The Student Affairs Department takes seriously its role as custodian and provider of students’ welfare at the college. A harmonious relationship has been developed with the students’ representative committee so as to ensure effective governance. The department also assists students to develop values and ethical standards such as a commitment to honesty, equality, dignity, justice, moral uprightness and responsive citizenship. In order to achieve this, the Student Affairs Department facilitates a Leadership Skills Training Seminar for wardens and each incoming Students Representative Council for effective contact and rhythm among the team members.
The Student Affairs Department boasts of a team of student centred Wardens whose major thrust is to create a student friendly college environment. Being headed by the Dean of Students, the team’s responsibility is to steer students’ affairs forward and cultivate a culture of student friendly service while maintaining order and discipline at the college.
The department is also committed to maintaining sterling standards with the catering services provided at the college dining hall. The provision of meals to students is according to specifications in keeping with their needs. Remarkably high standards of hygiene, cleanliness and food preparation are upheld. The three meals served everyday are breakfast, supper and lunch.
Accommodation is available on a first come first served basis. Single rooms are available although very limited. The shared rooms only accommodate a maximum of two students. Each hostel has recreational facilities such as pool games and subscribed DSTv services. Neatness in the halls of residence is taken seriously. The Wardens also assist in securing of out of campus accommodation for non-resident students whenever possible.
The college Sports Policy is committed to providing a wide range of sporting programmes for both students and staff. This vibrant department is headed by a Sports Co-ordinator who works hand in hand with the College Sports Council which is made up of sport codes, coaches and student affairs members. The college offers the following sporting disciplines to all students, including the physically challenged: Soccer, Cricket, Basketball, Netball, Handball, Rugby, Hockey, Table-tennis, Tennis, Golf, Chess, Darts, Volleyball, Athletics, Karate, Softball, Baseball. Our teams have been excelling notably at our inter-college games namely ZITCOSA-zonal and National games and the ZITISU competitions.
A wide spectrum of clubs for students’ choice is available on campus. These include the debate club, drama club, FOCUS as well as music. The clinic also supports healthy campus life by providing health education, counselling, treatment, HIV/AIDS testing and education once every a week. HIV/AIDS counselling and life skills guidance is also undertaken by the Student Affairs Department which also has a resourced counselling team in keeping with the national counselling policies. Support groups and peer education among students are facilitated for each group that comes into the college. The sexual harassment policy for student protection is also taken very seriously. Students are empowered to report against any harassment so as to foster a student friendly learning environment.
The college boasts a state of the art clinic which is headed by highly qualified personnel. The college nurse holds a BSc Nursing Science Degree, Mid-wifery qualifications as well as RGN. The clinic operates on campus and opens Mondays- Fridays from 7:30 – 4:30. The nurse resides on campus and is always available for emergencies even during the weekend. The college has a visiting doctor who comes to college every Wednesday. An ambulance for critical emergency services is always available. All students have medical cover, a facility through which they can access medical attention even outside the campus clinic and the college foots the bills.
The Department of Student Affairs is also responsible for the students’ catering services. All resident students are served three meals a day viz breakfast, lunch and supper.
